SEMINAR 13
Transnational higher education networks of learning and teaching in geography (TNLTs) - some preliminary findings

26 May 2011
10.30am - 12.30am British Summer Time

The recording of Kelly's talk is available at: http://tinyurl.com/elks-kw

Speaker:
Kelly Wakefield, PhD researcher, Geography Department, Loughborough University

About the seminar:

Despite a growing interest in geographies of higher education, little is known about higher education learning and teaching networks, the corporeal mobility of the network members alongside the virtual mobility of information and the subsequent circulation of knowledge. Participation within transnational learning and teaching networks arguably provides benefits of face-to-face social networking, online social networking and consequent knowledge flow. However, the sharing of ideas and information with other academics may be compromised through remaining barriers of global communication between members such as language, culture and access to technology. A global digital divide overshadows technology and the Web 2.0 revolution, hinting at post colonial undertones to membership and access to networking. This session aims to highlight some preliminary findings from my research and explore the themes and topics that arise from participation in learning and teaching networks. Possible findings may include the dimensions of access to the networks, motivations to participate and participation in regard to online platforms and face-to-face meetings.

About the speaker:
Kelly is a human geographer studying for a PhD on transnational higher education networks of learning and teaching in geography at Loughborough University. She studied for a BA at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston and for a MA in Landscape and Culture at the University of Nottingham. Her interests have moved within human geography over the years from looking at space, place and placelessness to culture and landscape, however, her interests now lie in areas of geographies of higher education and virtual landscapes. Having been a Research Assistant at the University of Chester, she became familiar with the Beyond Distance Research Alliance’s Impala 2 (podcasting) project at the University of Leicester. The relationships between higher education, networking, knowledge flows and technology have helped to shape the research that she is currently undertaking.

Moderators:
Palitha Edirisingha and Simon Kear

Discussion:
A thread for Seminar 13 has been set up in the Dicussion Area of ELKS.

About ELKS

ELKS shares resources and expertise via online forums about using technology in learning.

ELKS activities involve:

  • analysing existing and on-going research, programmes and practices in e-learning and distance learning, to identify best practice and developing guidelines, standards or templates for dissemination
  • sharing knowledge and findings of research studies on cutting-edge, new or emergent issues in higher education
  • identifying technological or organizational transformational solutions in order to overcome barriers to development using Information and Communication Technologies in the higher education sector
  • actively seeking opportunities for, and facilitating, multi-stakeholder partnerships and resource sharing in research into e-learning and distance learning education.
ELKS members take part in and host discussions, seminars and courses, entirely online, to exchange and inform one another in areas of expertise in the research and practice of e-learning. Online events are focused for maximum benefit from minimum investment of time.

ELKS invites institutions and individuals to become members and help staff and students around the world better to understand and use technologies to support learning.

I tried to access the session with an Ubuntu Linux (version 10.04) PC running Firefox 3.6.8. Connection attempt with the Ubuntu PC resulted in an error.

System error

The Meeting Room could not connect the Adobe Connect Enterprise Server. Pleas re-launch the Meeting Room, or refresh your browser to restore the connection.

When I grabbed a Win XP box the connection was established.

I am glad to help you out if you want to ensure Linux compatibility in the future.
